Can chiropractors relieve ankle and foot pain?Chiropractic adjustments can be performed on many different joints, including the ankle and foot.

While chiropractors focus on the spine, many are trained to adjust the extremities (arms and legs) as well as the TMJ (temporomandibular joint).Wherever two bones meet, there is a joint that can potentially become misaligned and needs adjustment.

The ankle is a fairly simple joint, and patients respond well to the typical ankle adjustment. At our Montreal Chiropractic ClinicThe adjustment involves pulling on your foot in a specific way to move the ankle joint.Relief can be immediate.

However, this is not a treatment for an ankle sprain, when the ligaments are already stretched and torn.During the initial examination, we will determine whether your ankle pain is due to a sprain or a tear.

As a general rule, we would not adjust a new injury. Most of the patients in our practice who mention ankle pain have been experiencing it for some time (such as months or years) and simply don’t know what else to do.They will describe the ankle as feeling “stuck” or “pinched” when they move it.

Treatment of Ankle and Foot Pain: Chiropractic Care

Foot pain is a whole other story. The foot has many small joints and can become misaligned as soon as you start walking on it again, due to the increased pressure of your body weight.Because the joints are small, they can shift easily.

Ankle Pain in Montreal

While nerve irritation or compression in the lower back can cause foot pain, this is usually not the case.Foot pain that is chronic in nature should really be evaluated by a podiatrist for best results. We can help you determine if our practice is the right place for you, but seeing a podiatrist for this issue is generally a better first step.

Over the years, we have developed more techniques and treatments to be as helpful as possible for ankle and foot pain, especially for our athletic patients who are trying to get back into action as quickly as possible.

Relieving Ankle Pain in Montreal

We can diagnose and relieve ankle pain in several different ways.

Chiropractic Care

The Chiropractic Adjustments in Montreal Spinal adjustments are helpful, but adjustments to the pelvis, foot, and ankle can make a bigger difference. Most patients don’t even realize that we can adjust more than just the spine.X-rays may be necessary for evaluation if a stress fracture is suspected, but many patients experience relief after that initial “pop” that puts the joint back in place.

If you twist your ankle, how do you “untwist” it?The ankle joint, in particular, can be repositioned properly, providing significant relief and allowing a return to normal activities.

Custom Orthotics

If you find that your ankle and foot pain keeps recurring, the problem may stem from how you walk or run.You can try changing your running style, but this is a challenge most people are unwilling to take on.Adding custom orthotics will help keep your foot in the correct position and prevent you from having to cancel all your treatment after your visit.

Exercises for Ankle and Foot Pain

You may see some improvement by adding exercises that enhance foot and ankle strength and mobility. Some people don’t know where to begin, so we’ve compiled our own list of recommended exercises.Adding the right exercises alongside chiropractic care can produce results that don’t require medication or surgery. Our goal is always to get you out of pain, but also to help you achieve lasting results.

Ankle and foot pain due to leg length discrepancy?

The possibility of a leg length discrepancy is often overlooked. This means that one leg is anatomically shorter than the other, causing you to put more weight on one foot than the other (usually the shorter side). This compensation can lead to many different problems, including backaches and knee pain. This can also compromise your gait and running, increasing stress on the ankle and foot.

Over time, the leg length discrepancy will wear down from one side to the other.A leg length X-ray can be performed in our office, which will measure the leg bones to the millimeter.Depending on the difference between the two sides, we can provide a small heel lift to compensate for the difference and restore balance.

The reason this is often overlooked is due to the small difference. When measured, most patients have a difference of 3 to 5 mm.This is not enough to be noticeable to the naked eye.It requires an X-ray to get a complete picture of what is happening with the legs and spine.Examining the leg length discrepancy is part of our initial examination process and will be taken into account when considering your ankle and foot pain.

Having ankle and foot pain doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a life of pain.
